The fifth-grade Bulldogs culminated their 2009 season the way that every young athlete dreams, as Champions! The Gig Harbor Bulldog football team (9-2) handed the Central Hornets (8-2) a 26-0 drubbing defeat to capture the Greater Puget Sound Youth Football League (GPSYFL) 2009 championship, bringing home the first GPSYFL Championship for the Bulldog organization.

The game, played at Steilacoom High School, was the third game in a row in which the opponents were unable to score against the stifling Bulldog defense. "Our boys believed, they played their hearts out and were absolutely unstoppable today," said Bulldogs head coach Scott Cantu. The Bulldog defense gave up only one first down in the game while forcing two crucial Hornet turnovers.

The Central Hornets were unable to counter the versatile Bulldog offence lead by captain and quarterback Avery Jones. The Bulldog offensive game plan centered around a relentless, nose busting, up the middle running game lead by captain running backs Henry Bainivalu, Trenton Roark and Blake Cantu. The Bulldog offense took the opening drive 65 yards on nine consecutive plays ending with a six-yard run by tailback Trenton Roark. The Bulldogs never looked back as they controlled the ball the remainder game, keeping the Hornets offence off the field. Roark concluded an outstanding season by adding two more touchdowns in the championship game to end the 2009 season with an incredible 25 touchdowns in 11 games.

"Our offensive line did an incredible job today," said Coach Cantu. "They made huge holes for the runners and their pass blocking was the best I've seen all year by any team in our league." The lopsided victory was capped off with a scrambling 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Avery Jones to Blake Cantu in the final seconds. "I was hoping Blake would catch it because he was covered really well," said Jones. "He made a great grab."

“The fifth-grade championship is a result of hard work, determination and an impressive display of teamwork, “said Bulldog President Mike Cosper. “The team has worked tirelessly in their pursuit of excellence and it paid off with a championship. They really get the fundamentals making it very exciting to watch. The GPSYFL is one of the toughest leagues in the state and the competition is stiff. I am very proud of all our teams; they all had a great season.”
