Before winter break, I happily accepted an invitation to visit Minter Creek Elementary School Art Specialist Jennifer Eakins’ Art Club.
What an enthusiastic and absorbed group of budding wanna-be Picassos, O’Keefes, Rembrandts, Homers or Cézannes these youngsters proved to be. Nothing, but nothing, evaded their attention and emulation.
Eakins said this is the third year of the program.
“I try to have two to three sessions a year in order to give the opportunity to the entire fifth-grade and some fourth-grade students,” she said.
Fifth-grader Emily Mary Frier said she loves art club.
“I can do all kinds of things I love to do,” she said.
Her classmate, Kayla Murray, added: “You can do what you want to do and express your feelings.”
Another student, Patty Brown, likes art club because her friends are there.
“I also learn new and more things than in school art (sic),” she said.
Adam Baca wrote: “I love to paint. My favorite part is when we do glass art and clay art. Art club is going to be very fun this year, and I know it will be.”
He added: “Thanks for coming (to Art Club), it was fun.”

Macy Schirmer said she loves painting and a bunch of other art techniques.
“Miss Eakins is the best art teacher ever,” Schirmer said. “She explains everything so well.”
Eakins said the art club’s focus this year has been in-depth study of painting techniques.
“This year we are doing watercolor paintings,” fifth-grader Lexi Graham said. “Everybody loves art club.”
Alex Wagaman said art club allows students to do “extra art.”
“So far, I have made some ant hills and some pumpkins,” Wagaman said.
Karissa Talent said she likes drawing and painting. And Cassidy Norton said art club is a way to express feelings.
Hannah Paige Kitchens, the only fourth-grader, said she likes art club because it’s fun, “and art painting is also fun.”
“We do all kinds of fun painting and drawings and (we) eat yummy snacks,” Ally Jo Brendel said. “Plus, we had a fun party on Halloween.”
Fun seems to be a common theme: Fellow artist-to-be Nadine Pasin said she has a lot of fun with her friends, and George Clarke said he learns a lot about art.
“It inspires me to draw and be creative,” Cheyenne Roland Gonzales said. “Also, I used to be all lazy and did nothing, then when I started doing this, I was not so lazy, so all I do now is draw.”
“Right now, I can’t wait to see what we do next,” said William Steven Cottey, another student. “I think it will be cool. So far, I like my military ant air force painting.”
Hold it right there! Military ant air force? I gotta admit, this is beyond my wildest imaginings.
I didn’t get a chance to see Cottey’s “painting,” but rest assured, when school resumes, I will.
Aubrey Lee Boltin was yet another student who enjoys the club.
“Art club rocks!” Boltin said. “I think that we wish we could have it every day. We do drawing and paintings. It’s awesome!”
“I think art club is the best,” Sarah Lincoln added. “That’s because it’s the first after-school program I’ve ever done, and it’s just awesome!”
Alexandria Hutchins said she’s in art club because she is inspired by art.
“I like to paint and draw,” she said. “I am also in art club because I can draw for a long time without knowing how long I’ve been drawing.”
“I love the way we can show our own personality and show who you are,” Jackie Haines added. “I love how we can express ourselves.”
Eakins, the art specialist, said an art show will be held at the end of the semester along with a choir concert that Minter Creek music director Paula DeMoss puts together with her Minter Choir kids.
